To become a lawyer and opting for field of Law, it is necessary to have proper knowledge about the method and procedure to become Lawyer. The degree of LLB (Legum Baccalaureus) is essential to proceed further as Lawyer and Law based posts and career. Two types of LLB; LLB after B.A and B.A-LLB after Intermediate has been offered by the Universities in Pakistan. LLB (Three Years) & B.A-LLB (Five Years). Higher Education Commission (HEC) in pursuance of directions of Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan has increased the duration of the LLB degree from 03 years to 05 years. From now on the admission shall be granted in 05 years LLB degree.
The essential steps for becoming Lawyer and pursuing a career in field of Law are:-
ADMISSION IN LLB:-
HEC has announced that the admission in LLB 05 years is subject to successful passing of Law Admission Test (LAT) prescribed for admission seeking students. Admission in all Universities in Pakistan offering LLB 05 years degree is subject to LAT Test. So passing the LAT Test is first step. The minimum qualification for admission is B.A.The admission is based on LAT Test score and aggregate of Educational Marks as prescribed by the Universities.
COMPLETION OF DEGREE:-
The degree of LLB shall be of 10 semesters; each of duration of 06 months.
REGISTRATION WITH BAR COUNCIL:-.
To become a Lawyer, a LLB degree holder must get his / her registration with the Bar Council to start the practice as Lawyer. In other words, the registration is first step to become a practitioner Lawyer. The Registration with the Bar Councils in Pakistan is also subject to passing of GAT-LAW similar to GAT-General test. It has been made compulsory by the HEC after directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan. Registration with Bar Council is a license for a Lawyer to appear in respective courts as Lawyer on behalf of clients. The registration is renewed by the Bar Councils every year on payment of prescribed fee which is 2000/-.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR A LAWYER IN PUBLIC SECTOR / GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS:-
There are large numbers of opportunities for Lawyers to pursue the field of Law as Career in Public Sector / Government Departments but two years registration meaning two years experience is necessary for Lawyers to apply against the posts in different Departments.
Here we discuss in brief different career opportunities for Lawyer in Government Sector:-
AS JUDGE OF HIGH COURT:-
A Lawyer of very good repute having 15 years experience is also eligible for recommendation appointment as Judge of High Court. The recommendations are made by the Bar Council and Committee for appointment of Judges headed by Chief Justice of High Court. A Judge of High Court has very bright chances to proceed further in career as Chief Justice of High Court, Judge of Supreme Court & Chief Justice of Supreme Court.
AS JUDGE STARTING FROM CIVIL JUDGE:-
A Lawyer with two years experience and LLB Degree is eligible to appear in Exams for appointment as Civil Judge. Civil Judge is eligible for promotion as Senior Civil Judge, Additional Session Judge and Session Judge. Session Judge may be recommended as Judge of High Court.
AS GOVERNMENT LAWYER (Assistant Advocate General (AAG), Assistant District Public Prosecutor (ADPP) & Deputy District Public Prosecutor (DDPP)):-
A Lawyer having registration with Bar Council may appear in Exam conducted by Punjab Public Service Commission on the requests of Law & Parliamentary Affairs and Public Prosecution Department.
AS LAW OFFICER / PROSECUTOR:-
Some departments do have posts of Law Officer / Prosecutor in order to deal with the large number of legal cases. They hire the services of Lawyers with suitable experience.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR A LAWYER IN PRIVATE SECTOR:-
A Lawyer has lots of opportunities in Private Sector as it has lots of variations in Private Sector. A Lawyer may work as Law Practitioner and appear in Civil Courts, Session Courts and High Courts. There are limits of experience for a Lawyer to appear in different courts of the country.
As a Consultant of Private Firms / Organizations to render their services to the private Firms/ Organizations. A Lawyer may also run his / her Law-Consultancy for resolving the issues of people relating with different Departments such as Home, Environment, Excise & Taxation, Income Tax, Agriculture etc. A Lawyer may work as Notary Public / Oath Commissioner.
